Does Balaay work with Open Dental?
Open Dental integration status: Not yet available. What Balaay does on your calls alongside Open Dental today, what it cannot do, and what would have to be true before we claim a Open Dental integration.
Does Balaay integrate with Open Dental? No. Not today.
In development
The connector is built but has not been proven against the real system, so it is not used on live calls.
No — not today. Balaay's Open Dental connector status is IN DEVELOPMENT. The connector is built but has not been proven against the real system, so it is not used on live calls. A connector exists at backend/src/integrations/openDental with a provider-agnostic contract, tenant-scoped credentials, real availability reads, a conflict re-check before commit, booking read-back and timeout reconciliation. 16 acceptance tests pass — all against a mocked transport. No credentials exist for any practice and no call has yet reached Open Dental. What Balaay does do on your calls, alongside Open Dental, is answer them, answer the caller's questions, capture the request and escalate anything urgent — and then hand your team the details to enter. Balaay closes the gap between a call ringing out and a patient calling someone else. It does not yet remove the data-entry step. If your requirement is that the appointment lands in your PMS untouched, Balaay is not the right product for you today, and several competitors claim to do it.
Balaay is an AI voice receptionist for dental practices. It answers the practice’s phone calls, books the appointment and texts the patient a confirmation, and escalates urgent calls to staff using rules the practice defines.
What "In development" means for Open Dental
A connector exists at backend/src/integrations/openDental with a provider-agnostic contract, tenant-scoped credentials, real availability reads, a conflict re-check before commit, booking read-back and timeout reconciliation. 16 acceptance tests pass — all against a mocked transport. No credentials exist for any practice and no call has yet reached Open Dental.
What is blocking it
- No Balaay-issued Open Dental Developer Key yet.
- No practice Customer Key, which Open Dental requires per practice.
- Zero calls have reached a real Open Dental instance, so nothing is verified end to end.
How Open Dental integration would work
Open Dental publishes a documented REST API and requires two keys: a Developer Key issued to the software vendor, and a Customer Key issued by each practice that authorises access. The practice controls that key and can revoke it.
Why this system, in this order
Open Dental has an open, documented API and a large independent-practice base, which makes it the realistic first integration. It is the one we are pursuing first.
What Balaay does today alongside Open Dental
This is the part that is easy to lose in a status page. Balaay not writing into your PMS does not mean it does nothing — it means the last step stays with your team.
It does do this
- Answers the call — after hours, at lunch, and when the front desk is already on the line.
- Answers questions about your practice from the information you give us: services, hours, which plans you accept, and your own policies.
- Captures the caller’s name, phone number and the reason for the call, on every call.
- Takes the appointment request — the treatment they want, and when they can come in.
- Escalates an urgent call to your staff immediately, using rules you define, instead of trying to book it.
- Texts or emails the patient a confirmation of what was agreed.
- Hands your team one structured record per call — who rang, what they wanted, what was agreed, what still needs doing.
It does not do this
- It does not read your PMS schedule, so the times it discusses come from the availability rules you give us, not from your live book.
- It does not write the appointment into your PMS. Someone on your team enters it.
- It does not look a patient up in your PMS, so it cannot confirm their record, balance or history.
- It does not reschedule or cancel an existing appointment. Those callers are handed to your staff.
Balaay closes the gap between a call ringing out and a patient calling someone else. It does not yet remove the data-entry step. If your requirement is that the appointment lands in your PMS untouched, Balaay is not the right product for you today, and several competitors claim to do it.
What would have to be true before we claim this integration
- Obtain a Balaay Developer Key from Open Dental.
- Run the existing acceptance suite against a real Open Dental instance rather than a mock — moving the connector to SANDBOX_TESTED.
- Run it with one pilot practice under supervision — CUSTOMER_VALIDATION.
- Only then does it become generally available — and only then does the status on this page change.
If you run Open Dental and would consider being the practice we validate against, that is the fastest route to a production-verified connector — and you would be doing it with us knowingly rather than discovering the state of it afterwards.
