An AI phone receptionist answers the line you already have
An AI phone receptionist answers your existing business line. How call diversion works, why you keep your number, what happens to the calls you already answer, and how to test it before a single customer reaches it.
The phone number on your van, your invoices and your Google listing does not change. You set one diversion with your phone provider and calls reach the AI instead of voicemail — either every call, or only the ones nobody picks up. That choice is yours and it is reversible in the time it takes to remove a dial code.
Balaay is an AI receptionist for businesses that run on calls. Balaay is an AI receptionist for businesses that run on calls. It learns a business from that business’s own website, answers its phone, holds the conversation, takes the next step where it can, and records what it actually did.
Three ways to point calls at it, in order of caution
Three options, from the most cautious to the least. The first is the usual starting point because it changes nothing about your working day.
- After-hours only. Evenings, weekends and holidays. Nothing changes during the day, and the calls that currently reach voicemail reach a receptionist instead.
- Unanswered calls only. The phone rings your team first; the AI picks up what they do not. This is the most common starting point and the least disruptive.
- Every call. The AI answers first and hands to a person when the caller asks or the call is urgent.
Why a setup step should not tick because you pressed a button
A diversion that silently fails looks identical to one that worked until a customer tells you they got voicemail. So the forwarding step in Balaay only completes when a real call actually arrives on the number — the system watches for it rather than asking you to confirm. If your provider is still diverting to Balaay while Balaay is switched off, callers hear a short neutral message and you are told the diversion is still live.
Testing it before a customer does
Ring the number yourself and ask the hardest question a customer has ever asked you. Then ask something your website does not answer — a price you only quote on the phone is the usual one. It should say it does not know and offer to have someone follow up. A receptionist that invents an answer there will invent one for a customer.
What the diversion codes actually are, and why we do not print one here
Conditional forwarding on most carriers is a short dial code — a star, some digits, the destination number, a hash. The exact code differs per carrier and sometimes per plan, and a wrong one fails silently: you hear a confirmation tone and nothing is forwarded. Balaay shows the verified steps for carriers we have confirmed and plain instructions where we have not, rather than a generic code that might work. One further detail that catches people out on iPhones: a code containing a star or a hash cannot be dialled from a tel: link, so it has to be typed into the keypad.
What this page will not claim
Number porting is not offered. You keep your number by diverting it, not by moving it to Balaay, and if you want the number itself transferred that is a carrier process Balaay does not currently run.
